Choose grapefruits with thin, smooth, firm blemish-free skins that are heavy for their size. They should be heavy and plump.
Make sure you don't see any green patches. When ripe, not all grapefruit are round; they can be oval and have flat tops.
Store on the counter for about 10 days or place in the fridge in a dark spot to last longer.
